Delivering donations to help Mission Australia help those in need

This year marks the 29th anniversary of Australia’s largest and longest running Christmas gift appeal, the Kmart Wishing Tree Appeal – an initiative that provides gifts for those in need during the holiday season.

Led by Kmart and Mission Australia, the Wishing Tree Appeal brings joy to many Australian families and children every year, with 35 Kmart stores across the country providing gifts directly to the charity.

In 2015, Toll Fast provided transport services to support the Wishing Tree Appeal in Victoria; collecting donations from Kmart stores across the state and delivering them to Mission Australia facilities so they could be sorted and distributed to those in need.

Toll Fast Sales Analyst, Noeleen Walker, coordinated the project on behalf of Toll this year – bringing together teams from Toll Fast and Toll Priority to provide transport services between Kmart stores and Mission Australia facilities.

“Speaking to state managers from across Toll in the lead up to the holiday period, the response was consistent – everyone was delighted to be able to lend a hand to this great initiative that helps to bring a little bit of joy to those in need every year,” said Noeleen.

Mission Australia’s National Project Coordinator, Brett Curran, said the hard work and dedication shown by the Toll team last Christmas made the decision to have Toll take care of logistics nationally for this year’s appeal an easy one.

“After the success we had working together last year in Victoria, it’s been wonderful to be doing more of the same across Australia this year,” said Brett.

“Without a logistics partner, we would need to rely on our volunteers to collect donations from stores and bring them to our facilities for sorting. We have wonderful volunteers who provide invaluable support for us during the holiday season, but sometimes the family station wagon isn’t quite big enough to carry everything!”

Acknowledging the professionalism of the Toll drivers who have been delivering the presents, Brett said it’s not uncommon to find them going above and beyond to ensure the donations are being transported securely.

“The Toll drivers that have worked on this project with us across Australia have consistently gone above and beyond to assist us – most often, people leave donations in Christmas wrapping that aren’t necessarily packaged to be transported. Your drivers have assisted to pack presents before loading them on to the truck, to make sure they arrive undamaged.”

“Due to the nature of the appeal, and its national scale, having the flexibility and agility to be able to mobilise an appropriate sized truck with committed drivers, as and when needed, even on short notice, to get the gifts from Kmart stores delivered to us – that’s been fantastic.”

“On behalf of Mission Australia, I’d like to thank Toll for the support, flexibility and patience you’ve shown throughout the Wishing Tree Appeal for the second year in a row – each and every person, from those coordinating the project to the drivers on the road carrying the donations, should feel proud to be assisting those in need during what can be, for some, a very difficult time of the year.”
