As a participating police force in the Solomon Islands, the Australian government requires a reliable logistics partner to provide mission-critical helicopter services in the region.
The Regional Assistance Mission to Solomon Islands (RAMSI) is a partnership between the people and Government of the Solomon Islands and 15 contributing countries of the Pacific region.
Established to lay foundations of stability in the region, RAMSI aims to support a functioning democratic government, security and prosperity in the Solomons.
In 2003 the Australian Federal Police (AFP) and the Australian Defence Force (ADF) joined the mission, stationing more than 1800 personnel in the region.
They required an experienced logistics partner with the capacity to deliver a diverse suite of garrison, supply chain, helicopter support and remote logistics services.
Drawing from our experience working with government and defence customers in remote locations, we have provided logistics solutions to support past and current operations undertaken by Australian forces as part of RAMSI since 2004.
Between 2004 and 2010, Toll's remote logistics team provided comprehensive garrison support services, logistics services and supply chain management to support camp operations for AFP and ADF personnel.
As RAMSI operations have progressed, Toll’s solution has evolved to meet the changing requirements of Australia’s forces during the life of the mission.
From the initial provision of four medium twin-engine helicopters – three Bell 412s and a BK117 – we now provide mission-critical helicopter services with a pair of Bell 412s that are on 30 minute notice to move 24/7, 365 days a year.
And today our helicopters fly between 120-200 hours per month on average, consistently taking on challenging conditions; poor weather, long overwater flight segments and hostile terrain require our pilots to utilise infrared technology (IFR) and night vision goggles (NVG).
Since 2010, Toll has flown more than 5400 hours accident-free as part of our RAMSI logistics support services while keeping our availability rate consistently above the minimum performance requirement of 95%.
During this time we have provided a broad range of mission-critical services throughout the region for the AFP, including:
- aero-medical evacuations for RAMSI personnel and local nationals
- search and rescue (SAR) operations, often coordinated by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA)
- primary response during disasters
- surveillance and reconnaissance missions
- logistic support to outposts in the Solomon Islands region
- covert police operations
- training for AFP agents and medical evacuation teams in a variety of roles
Toll’s ability to deliver consistent and valuable support to Australian forces in the Solomon Islands led us to secure an extended contract which will see us continue to provide these services until mid-2017.
