Toll supports disaster relief in the Philippines

Our global network, diverse fleet and proven ability to provide emergency relief services allow us to deliver much-needed support for aid efforts around the world when natural disasters strike.

The Challenge

When Typhoon Haiyan hit the Philippines in 2013 – killing more than 6,000 and displacing 14 million others – it became the strongest tropical cyclone ever recorded, causing widespread destruction.

To assist the United Nations in delivering supplies to areas most affected by the disaster, the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) provided the HMAS Tobruk to transport 25 trucks to the World Food Program (WFP).

With our proven experience in disaster relief, Toll was engaged by RAN to provide port services and vessel husbandry to the ship whilst in the Philippines.

In addition to sending the fleet of trucks to the WFP, the Royal Australian Navy was also prepared to deploy troops to assist in supplying aid to the local population – Toll was put on standby to provide ground support wherever necessary.

The Solution

Toll’s remote logistics operation sent an officer from our Defence & Government team to Cebu Province in the Philippines ahead of the HMAS Tobruk to survey the area prior to the ship’s arrival.

Our officer conducted invaluable reconnaissance, travelling to the worst affected areas to scout for issues that could impact the timely delivery of the HMAS Tobruk’s important cargo.

Utilising our extensive experience in vessel husbandry, we were able to source and provide the HMAS Tobruk with equipment and provisions to ensure RAN was able to complete their mission successfully.

The Results

With Toll’s support, RAN was able to successfully deliver the fleet of trucks to the World Food Program, enabling the timely distribution of much-needed supplies to areas in the Philippines most affected by the typhoon.

Toll has a proud 13 year history of providing the Royal Australian Navy with a range of port and vessel husbandry services, utilising our global network to facilitate their marine logistics and provide humanitarian aid wherever and whenever it is needed.
