Bryony Smith one of our 2018 Toll Graduates, has spent the last six months working in the support office within the National Transport team in New Zealand. Bryony talks about her experiences in this division, and what she learned along the way.
For a little over six months now, I’ve been part of the Graduate Program at Toll and during this time I’ve been given endless exciting opportunities within the business.
During my time here I have had the privilege of working on numerous projects, collaborating with many industry professionals and senior managers. Being part of these projects has given me exposure to the many different areas within Toll and allowed me to be involved in process improvement and cost saving exercises among over things – including writing a Newsletter that gets sent out to the Network every 6 weeks!
In my first rotation I was based within the National Transport Team at our Support Office in Auckland. I spent the first eight weeks of this rotation working alongside the admin – analyst. During this time I created many spreadsheets analysing different cost structures, expenses and auditing hence I really got to hone my excel skills!
I then moved into the National Transport Support Team who provides the network 24 hour support by completing line haul monitoring, incident management, reporting and implementing the safe drive program. I did some interesting hours during this time including night shifts and I got the chance to interact with many of the drivers in our network.
One of the most challenging but also rewarding parts of this rotation was when I was given the chance to act as the National FTL Dispatcher for two weeks during our peak season. As a dispatcher, it was my responsibility to plan the movements for this fleet of truck and trailer units; this meant I had to juggle bookings from the sales team as well as providing the rest of the network support when spare units where required. These units were utilised by many of our biggest customers in NZ. Completing this task definitely taught me a lot about the value of pre planning and also the many obstacles that can be thrown your way in the Transport industry!
I’m currently based at our Auckland Parcels Branch where I am balancing both project work and operations. I’m enjoying getting the chance to chuck on my hi vis and steel toe caps to learn from the ground level up. I’ve also been given the chance to head up a project which will involve the whole parcel network within New Zealand and also allow me to dabble in communications and marketing which are my passions.
I’m very lucky that Toll have allowed me to jump on board with these opportunities and follow my passions where I can!
