Enhancing logistics services for eBay

With more than 160 million active users, eBay is one of the world’s most notable eCommerce marketplaces. In response to the company’s continuing expansion, Toll was engaged to provide a seamless business-to-consumer (B2C) solution that connects sellers based in Asia to customers in Australia.

The Challenge

With more than three quarters of Australian internet users using online and mobile commerce platforms to buy goods from overseas, digital purchasing through stores like eBay has fast become a mainstream activity.

Seeing an opportunity to better connect eBay users in southern China, Hong Kong and Taiwan with buyers in Australia, eBay and Toll decided to work collaboratively to develop an economical B2C logistics solution.

The Solution

Tapping into the strength of our global forwarding and express freight businesses in southern China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Australia, Toll devised a seamless, end-to-end supply chain solution for eBay users.

A dedicated team of more than 30 personnel from various parts of Toll was tasked with determining eBay’s requirements and implementing a new supply chain model to enhance the way that sellers in southeast Asia do business with customers in Australia.

Within the new model, when sellers in southern China, Hong Kong and Taiwan receive orders from eBay buyers in Australia, they process their purchase documentation through Toll’s online track and trace tool GETonline.

Sellers deliver the shipment to appointed Toll warehouses in Southern China, Hong Kong and Taiwan where the parcels are processed and prepared for export. Shipments are sorted into four ports of entry – Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth.

The cargo is consolidated, and transported via air freight from southern China, Hong Kong and Taiwan to Australia, where Toll’s Global Forwarding  Australia team – responsible for performing all required destinations clearance procedures –ensures each parcel undergoes the required customs procedures to enter the country.

Finally, the parcels are collected by Toll trucks and delivered directly to the buyers – a mere four to six working days after their orders were placed through eBay. The transit time is faster than postal solutions with a competitive rate and end to end track and trace

The Results

Thanks to successful collaboration on a global scale and the ability to implement enhanced supply chain solutions, we were able to improve the experience for buyers in Australia while increasing opportunities for sellers in southeast Asia.

In addition to streamlining the outgoing processes for sellers exporting items, the new supply chain significantly improves the speed of delivery for buyers; promising results since its initial implementation show that shipments are being delivered consistently, at rates that exceed the market average for the trade lane between Australia and south east Asia.
